Coleman was born at Blackpool Lancashire. She was educated at Arnold School in Blackpool. In her time as headgirl, she scored straight A grades for her A-Levels. When Coleman was asked about her role in Emmerdale she replied she regretted having not had a traditional university experience. Coleman was a part of a theatre company, In Yer Space while in school. The company performed at the Edinburgh Festival for the play Crystal Clear. In addition to winning a prize for her acting skills, the show that she performed was well-received. Coleman won the Emmerdale role Jasmine Thomas after auditioning with drama schools. Coleman was awarded two awards in 2007. She was nominated for two awards. British Soap Awards nominated her as best newcomer. In the National Television Awards, she was nominated as the best newcomer with the highest popularity.
